Understanding Laminate Flooring Prices: What You Are Actually Paying For

Not all laminate is equal. Two products both listed as "8mm laminate" can perform very differently and cost R251/m² versus R468/m² for good reason. Here is what the price difference comes down to.

1. AC Rating / Grade / Classification

Laminate wear resistance is described using three systems — our labels (Light / Medium / Heavy), the international AC rating, and the EN 13329 Grade number. All three mean the same thing.

Our LabelAC RatingGradeApplication
Light ResidentialAC1Grade 21Lighter, infrequent traffic
General ResidentialAC2Grade 22General residential, all rooms
Heavy ResidentialAC3Grade 23Heavy residential, all areas of the home
Light CommercialAC3Grade 31Small offices, low-traffic commercial
Medium CommercialAC4Grade 32Offices, medium-traffic commercial areas
Heavy CommercialAC5Grade 33Retail, high-traffic, maximum durability

2. Thickness

Thickness affects joint strength, underfoot feel, and sound. A thicker board has a deeper tongue-and-groove joint — more rigid, less flex, less hollow sound underfoot. Thicker boards also bridge minor subfloor imperfections better. 7mm is entry-level. 8mm is the SA standard. 10mm and 12mm give a noticeably more solid feel and suit commercial or premium applications.

3. Plank Dimensions and Format

Longer planks (1800mm+) look more like real timber and have fewer end joints in a room. Standard lengths are 1200mm–1380mm in budget ranges. Width follows the same logic — standard is 180mm–200mm, extra-wide boards (230mm–245mm) feel more premium and suit larger open-plan spaces.

Herringbone formats carry a price premium for two reasons: the manufacturing complexity of cutting planks at 45° angles, and the additional installation waste (use 15% wastage allowance, not 10%). Expect R500/m² and above for herringbone laminate.

4. V-Groove Edges

A V-groove is a chamfered edge routed into each plank so a small groove forms where planks meet. It defines each plank visually and — more practically — conceals the minor height tolerances between adjacent planks that are normal in any click-lock installation. Without a V-groove, slight height variations catch light and are visible. Square-edge planks look flatter and more uniform.

5. Moisture Resistance

No laminate is waterproof. Moisture resistance comes from three places: the HDF core (premium products are chemically treated to resist swelling, not just denser), waxed or resin-sealed joint edges (slows spill penetration — not all products include this), and the backing layer (moisture barrier against subfloor transmission). Products listed as "water resistant" on our site have enhanced treatment in at least one of these areas. For bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry rooms use our SPC rigid core vinyl range — genuinely 100% waterproof.

6. Design Quality — Print Technology and EIR

Visual realism comes from two layers: the decorative paper (high-resolution photographic print of real timber) and the surface texture pressed over it. Budget laminates use a generic embossed texture that may not align with the print beneath. Premium products use EIR (Embossed In Register) technology — the texture physically follows the exact grain, knots, and pores of the printed image. The result looks and feels significantly more like real wood. EIR is one of the main reasons premium laminates look better, even before considering AC rating or thickness.

How Much Will It Cost?

Laminate is priced per m² but sold in boxes that cannot be split — add 10% wastage to your room size, then round up to the nearest full box. Coverage per box varies by product and is shown in the specifications on each product page. Each product page also includes a built-in calculator — enter your room dimensions and it calculates exactly how many boxes you need, including wastage.

No — correct specification matters more than highest price. AC3 suits any residential room. AC5 is designed for commercial punishment. But price also reflects features beyond AC rating: EIR texture, extra-wide plank formats, longer planks, chemically treated moisture-resistant cores and extended warranties all add cost. The right question is not which is cheapest but which features do I actually need for this room — then find the best price for that specification.

Yes, in most cases — tiles must be sound, level, and free of raised edges. A thin underlay bridges minor variations. See our Learning Centre for full subfloor preparation guidance.
