Vinyl SPC Rigid Boards Overview:
Vinyl SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring is a durable, water-resistant flooring option that mimics natural materials like wood or stone. It's ideal for residential and commercial spaces due to its strength and aesthetic appeal. Vinyl SPC flooring typically uses a click-lock installation system, which makes it easy to fit the planks together without glue or nails.
Construction:
SPC flooring typically consists of:
- Wear Layer: Protects against scratches and stains.
- Decor/Print Layer: Features high-resolution designs.
- SPC Core: A rigid core made from limestone and PVC, providing stability and moisture resistance.
- Underlayment: Some options come with an attached layer for comfort and sound absorption.
Installation:
Installation of SPC Vinyl is straightforward and Ideal for the DIY Enthusiast:
- Prepare the Subfloor: Ensure it's clean, dry, and level.
- Acclimate Planks: Let them sit in the room for 48 hours.
- Lay DPM/Underlayment: If not pre-attached, roll out a suitable underlayment.
- Install Planks: Use the click-lock system to connect planks, staggering seams for floor strength and a natural look.
- Finish: Add baseboards or moldings to cover expansion gaps.
This combination of easy installation and robust performance makes SPC flooring a popular choice.
Accessories Needed: Installation Kit, Damp Proof Membrane, Door Profiles and Skirtings or Quarter Rounds if leaving existing skirtings in place.
Stone Plastic Composite core is fully waterproof — safe in kitchens, bathrooms and wet areas.
Limestone composite core resists warping, bending and denting under heavy loads.
UV-cured wear layer protects against daily scratches, scuffs and surface abrasion.
Sweep and damp mop. No waxing, polishing or refinishing ever needed.
No glue, no nails, no special tools. Floating click system most DIYers manage first time.
UV-cured coating protects colour and pattern from direct sunlight exposure.
Rigid core maintains shape under temperature fluctuation. Expansion gaps still required.
Most ranges include pre-attached underlay — no separate DPM needed on most substrates.
Wood, stone and abstract designs in wide plank and tile formats to suit any space.
Phthalate-free, waterproof surface handles spills and pet accidents without damage.
IXPE/EVA backing layer dampens impact noise — quieter underfoot than laminate.
Floating installation — lift and reuse or replace individual planks without subfloor damage.
Quality of Vinyl SPC Rigid Flooring
The quality and wear layer of SPC flooring are critical factors influencing durability and performance. Key indicators:
Core Construction
The Stone Plastic Composite (SPC) core provides strength and stability, making the flooring resistant to warping and moisture.
Thickness
Quality SPC typically ranges from 4mm to 8mm. Thicker planks offer better durability and sound insulation.
Design Variety
Available in various wood, stone and abstract designs, colours and textures.
Certification Standards
Look for FloorScore (low VOC emissions) and ASTM/ISO compliance. Technical data sheets are available as a download on each product page.
Wear Layer Thickness and Abrasion Resistance
SPC vinyl does not use the AC rating system used for laminate. Durability is measured by wear layer thickness — the transparent protective layer above the décor print. The thicker the wear layer, the more resistant the floor is to abrasion, scratches and general wear.
Residential Use

Caring for Your SPC Vinyl Floor
SPC vinyl is one of the lowest-maintenance floors available. Follow these guidelines to keep it looking its best for decades.
⚠ Do Not Use Rubber-Backed Mats on SPC or Any Vinyl Flooring
Antioxidants used in rubber manufacturing react chemically with the plasticizers in vinyl through a process called plasticizer migration. This causes a permanent, irreversible yellow stain that cannot be cleaned or removed — even with professional products. The discolouration develops slowly over weeks and is only noticed when the mat is eventually moved.
Also avoid:
- Rubber furniture feet — use felt pads only
- Rubber wheels on carts, trolleys or appliances
- Any "non-slip" mat unless specifically marked vinyl-safe
✓ Safe alternatives: cotton, jute, felt or polymer mesh-backed mats
Daily Care
- Sweep daily with a soft brush or vacuum on hard floor setting — remove grit before it scratches
- Damp mop with a well-wrung microfibre mop and pH-neutral cleaner — never flood the floor
- Wipe spills immediately — SPC is waterproof but prolonged standing water on joins can seep into seams
- Felt pads under all furniture legs — never rubber feet (causes permanent yellow staining)
Cleaning Products
- Use: pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner or mild soapy water
- Avoid: Bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, harsh solvents
- Never: Wax or polish — SPC needs no coating, build-up dulls the surface
- Never: Steam cleaners — high heat damages the wear layer and backing
- Never: Steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive powders
Stains & Scuffs
- Light scuffs: Soft cloth with water or mild cleaner
- Stubborn marks: Melamine foam sponge (Magic Eraser) used gently — do not scrub hard
- Ink or oil: Isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth, rub gently then rinse with clean water
- Grease: Small amount of mineral spirits on cloth — do not over-apply or spread
Preventative Measures
- Place vinyl-safe doormats (cotton, jute or felt backed) at all entrances — never rubber-backed
- Avoid stiletto heels and sharp objects — concentrated weight can dent the surface
- Felt pads under all furniture legs — check and replace periodically as they wear down
- Use blinds or curtains to limit prolonged direct sun in full-sun rooms
- Keep the 10mm expansion gap at all perimeters clear — never seal permanently
Periodic Deep Clean
Every few months, sweep thoroughly then mop with a vinyl floor cleaner. Ensure the floor dries completely — avoid standing water at any time. A well-wrung damp mop is always sufficient — do not flood the floor.
