When to Use TAL X-Shield VaporStop HB
TAL X-Shield VaporStop HB is a moisture-tolerant, two-component solvent-free epoxy primer for use on concrete substrates with high moisture vapour emission rates (MVER). On curing it produces a high cross-link density barrier coat that prevents the debonding of coatings and floor toppings caused by excessive moisture vapour transmission through the slab.
Required when substrate moisture exceeds 3% (50% RH) before the installation of TAL Profix, TAL Profix Plus or TAL Profix Plus LVT adhesives. Also suitable as a gas barrier, chemical barrier, and for Radon mitigation.
Important: This product must be applied by experienced coating crews only. A MVER test (ASTM F1869) or internal relative humidity test (ASTM F2170) must be carried out before application. For slabs with MVER exceeding 20 lbs/24h/1000ft² or IRH exceeding 95%, a trial panel must be assessed for a minimum of 60 days before full installation.
Coverage & Application Rates
Coverage is determined by the substrate MVER reading. Apply using a heavy-duty squeegee, scrubbing into pores with a long-handle scrub brush and back-rolling with a short-hair roller for a uniform finish.
- MVER up to 15 lbs/24h/1000ft²: 400 microns WFT — 0.4 L/m² — ±12.5m² per kit
- MVER 15–20 lbs/24h/1000ft²: 500 microns WFT — 0.5 L/m² — ±10m² per kit
- MVER 20–25 lbs/24h/1000ft²: 650 microns WFT — 0.65 L/m² — ±7.5m² per kit
- Up to 90% internal relative humidity: 500 microns WFT — 0.5 L/m² — ±10m² per kit
- 90–100% internal relative humidity: 650 microns WFT — 0.65 L/m² — ±7.5m² per kit
- When used as a gas barrier: two coats at 500 microns each — ±5m² per kit
Actual coverage may be up to 20% higher than theoretical due to surface profile and wastage.
Application
The substrate must be structurally sound, free of oil, grease, paint, laitance and surface contamination. Prepare by captive blasting or high-pressure water blasting to produce a lightly exposed aggregate surface (ICRI CSP 3 or 4). Fill any cracks or bug holes with X-Shield BugFill after application.
Pre-mix both base and hardener components separately to disperse any settlement. Add all of the hardener into the base and mix with a slow-speed drill (350–500 rpm) using an approved mixing paddle for 5 minutes until uniform in colour. Mix only full packs. Pot life is 30 minutes at 20°C — work within this window. Apply topping or adhesive within 12–16 hours of application.
Storage & Shelf Life
18 months when stored below 35°C in a dry, shaded environment. Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use. Protect from UV exposure.
Health & Safety
For use by trained, experienced operatives only. Avoid skin contact. Do not apply below 10°C. Clean hands and skin immediately with industrial hand cleaner. Clean tools immediately after use with X-Shield Solvent S — cured product cannot be removed with water. Do not discard into the water system. Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet before use.
