When to Use TAL Screedmaster
TAL Screedmaster is a commercial-grade self-levelling and smoothing underlayment compound used to prepare concrete and screeded substrates before installing floor coverings. It is the correct product when you need a fast-setting, flat, hard-wearing base and installation time is critical. TAL Floor Primer is required for all applications — available separately on FlooringStore.co.za.
TAL Screedmaster is an underlayment product only — it must be covered with a durable floor covering once cured. It is not suitable for external or exposed areas and is not a decorative or overlayment finish. For overlayment or decorative screed applications use TAL Superflow or TAL Stoneflow.
Pack Contents & Coverage
- Pack size: 22kg bag
- Mixing water: Exactly 5 litres per bag — do not exceed
- Coverage rate: 1.8 kg/m² per 1mm thickness
- Approximate yield: 5m² at 3mm per 22kg bag
- Application thickness: 3mm minimum — 16mm maximum (single application)
Actual coverage will vary depending on substrate profile, flatness, and site conditions.
Application Summary
Application must be carried out by experienced and competent artisans. This is a skilled operation — application by unskilled labour is not recommended.
- Substrate: Concrete or screeded surfaces. Must be clean, dry, sound, and free from contamination. Minimum compressive strength 20 MPa.
- Moisture: Substrate must be at or below 5% moisture content (75% RH) before application. Apply TAL VaporStop HB if moisture levels are not attained.
- Priming rough/porous surfaces: 2 coats TAL Floor Primer applied in cross directions. Allow 12 hours to cure before proceeding.
- Priming smooth/dense surfaces: TAL Floorkey + TAL Rapidfix slurry coat first, then TAL Floor Primer. Allow 12 hours to cure before proceeding.
- Mixing: Add 22kg to exactly 5 litres of clean water (15–25°C). Mix with a mechanical drill — minimum 1.8kW with paddle attachment — for 5 minutes. Allow to stand 3 minutes then re-stir. Do not mix by hand. Use full bags only. Never retemper a mix that has been standing too long.
- Pot life: 30–50 minutes. Working time after mixing: 20 minutes.
- Pouring: Pour and spread with a TAL Adjustable Floor Spreader or TAL Notched Floor Rake to required thickness. Roll with a TAL Spiked Roller while wearing TAL Spiked Shoes to release trapped air.
- Temperature: Ambient and slab temperature must be between 10°C and 30°C throughout installation and curing. Optimum is 20°C.
- Protection: Protect from direct sunlight, wind, and rapid drying for the first 48 hours. Do not use air conditioning during curing.
Always refer to the full TAL Screedmaster Method Statement before commencing installation.
