When You Need TAL Bitumen Primer
Old vinyl tiles were traditionally fixed with bitumen-based adhesive. When these tiles are removed, a thin layer of bitumen residue remains bonded to the substrate. Standard cement-based screeds and underlayments will not bond reliably over this residue. TAL Bitumen Primer is specifically formulated to encapsulate bitumen fixative residues and restore a sound, bondable surface for the next floor covering installation.
Suitable for use over thin bitumen fixative residues up to 2mm thickness in isolated areas (maximum 20% of total floor area). Not suitable over acrylic fixatives or bituminous waterproofing systems.
Kit Contents & Coverage
Each kit contains 15kg grey powder and 5L milky-white liquid, mixed on site at a ratio of 15kg : 5L. Coverage approximately 4.25kg/m² at the minimum recommended application thickness of 2.5mm. Pot life 60 minutes after mixing. Mix entire kit in one batch — part mixing is not recommended.
Application
Pour mixed product onto the prepared substrate and spread using a serrated rake or adjustable floor spreader to a minimum film thickness of 2.5mm. Application by brush or roller is not recommended. Application and slab temperature range 10°C–30°C. Protect from foot traffic until fully cured.
Once cured, TAL Superscreed or TAL Screedmaster can be applied over the primer to achieve a smooth finish ready for resilient floor covering installation.
Storage & Shelf Life
Store in original sealed packaging in dry internal conditions between 10°C and 30°C, out of direct sunlight. Shelf life 6 months from date of manufacture. Never store directly on a concrete floor. Keep liquid containers tightly sealed and upright.
Health & Safety
For use by trained operatives on industrial installations only. PPE required: eye protection, gloves, dust mask, coveralls, safety shoes. Refer to the TAL Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prior to purchase and use. Contact TAL Technical Advice Centre: 0860 000 825 or taltech@tal.co.za.
