Buying Herringbone or Parquet — What to Budget For
Order 20% extra. Herringbone and parquet cut far more waste than straight plank, where 10% is the norm. Push it higher again for small rooms, passages, and anything with angles or bay windows — the smaller the area, the worse the offcut ratio.
It's a step up from a standard DIY floor. The pattern has to be set out from a centre line and every plank goes down at an angle, so mistakes compound quickly and are hard to correct later. It's doable yourself if you're patient, work off a properly marked centre line, and dry-lay the first few rows before committing. If you'd rather hand it over, expect a higher fitting rate than a straight click floor. Cushion vinyl is the exception — it lays like any sheet vinyl.
Subfloor preparation is key. Any dip or high spot shows up far more across an angled pattern than it does under straight planks, so the floor needs to be smooth and flat before you start. A smoothing compound — generally sold as self-levelling screed — is the standard fix and should be budgeted for from the outset rather than discovered on install day. On ground floors a moisture barrier is advisable, whatever the material going down.
Know how each material fits. Laminate herringbone comes as matched left and right planks, though universal-plank ranges are starting to appear. LVT is glue-down — there's no click system in herringbone. Engineered is tongue and groove, glued down, and needs a moisture barrier. Fitting methods vary between manufacturers and even between ranges, so always check the installation instructions supplied with your product before you start.
